Immodesty, Satan’s Virtue – BOOK REVIEW

Immodesty,‭ ‬Satan’s Virtue
By Rita Davidson

Unlike every Catholic website, blog, book, article and speaker so far, the author of “immodesty…..” answers every question, and does not leave room for speculation. She leaves the reader with information on how to contact her with any questions !

The book that survived a fire so fierce,‭ ‬that it was melting the headlights on the fire truck‭!!

‭ ‬Oh great,‭ ‬another book on modesty.‭ ‬Either this book was going to be another,‭ ‬“Modesty has to do with the heart, not the hemline‭” ‬or‭ “‬The showing of thy ankles and wrists will bring hellfire and damnation upon‭ ‬all ye women of the Devil‭!” ‬There was no way around it‭; ‬whether or not modesty was considered an issue today by Catholic women,‭ ‬it was‭ ‬always‭ ‬a subject that left Catholics frothing at the mouths and spouting uncharitable words at each other.‭ ‬Bible-touting Baptists and Pope-Hating Sedevacantists were‭ ‬the only‭ ‬Christians who still believed in those old fashioned‭ “‬modesty‭” ‬rules.‭ ‬And just looking at the title of this book,‭ ‬it was‭ ‬painfully clear that the Catholic bloggers were going to have a field day without ever reading it in its entirety.‭

The only difference between every single book,‭ ‬blog post,‭ ‬article or YouTube video that talked about Catholic modesty I have poured over was‭; ‬this book was beyond anything even I could have imagined‭!‬

Here’s why;

I have been a‭ “‬crusader‭” of sorts ‬for modesty since the age of sixteen‭; ‬I have learned so much these past seven years‭… ‬from pulling away from the closed-minded Catholic group that taught me the modesty I came to know through my childhood,‭ ‬to starting over and learning how to see others in‭ ‬a charitable light instead of judgment and pride.‭ ‬I have seen and felt the sting of scruples and battled the‭ “‬war of inches‭” ‬for a long time.‭ ‬What was God calling me to do‭!? ‬I knew modesty was very important,‭ ‬and yet,‭ ‬no one could agree on anything‭! ‬I knew that the idea of modesty that is promoted by much of the Catholic media today had holes in it‭; ‬it was as though everyone now believed that we were all like Adam and Eve‭ ‬before the fall‭; ‬if we learned to love the other person with God’s love we would receive the‭ “‬Pure Interior Gaze‭”‬,‭ ‬therefore we wouldn’t lust after their bodies and what we wore didn’t matter as much.‭ ‬Had we suddenly grew‭ ‬apart‭ ‬from our lustful concupiscence,‭ ‬and Original Sin that we are all born with‭? ‬What about those who‭ ‬had no‭ “‬Pure Interior Gaze‭”?‬ And why did Jesus say in the bible,‭ “whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” ? (Matthew 5:28) ‬Or, every other bible quote on women, modesty and men being enticed to lust‭? (
Tobias (Tobit) 6:17,  Proverbs 28:28,  1 Tim 2:9, Deuteronomy 22:5, ROMANS 21 on..)
Ecclesiasticus 9:9 was just for those times when people are barbarians right?
For many have perished by the beauty of a woman, and hereby lust is enkindled as a fire.

When then, is it repeated again in Matthew 5:28? But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

And what about  Colossians 3:5?
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is the service of idols. (YIKES!)

2 Peter 2:9-10:

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly from temptation, but to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be tormented. And especially them who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government, audacious, self willed, they fear not to bring in sects, blaspheming.

1 John 2:16-2:17

‘For all that is in the world is the concupiscence of the flesh and the concupiscence of the eyes and the pride of life, which is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passeth away and the concupiscence thereof: but he that doth the will of God abideth for ever.’

‬What about all the quotes from saints that talked about‭ ‬lust,‭ ‬concupiscence,‭ ‬and immodesty‭? ‬Such as St.‭ ‬John Chrysostom‭? ‬Padre Pio‭? St. Thomas Aquinas?

“We must be pure. I do not speak merely of the purity of the senses. We must observe great purity in our will, in our intentions, in all our actions.”
— Saint Peter Julian Eymard

We must practice modesty, not only in our looks, but also in our whole deportment, and particularly in our dress, our walk, our conversation, and all similar actions.”
— Saint Alphonsus Liguori

“In the realm of evil thoughts none induces to sin as much as do thoughts that concern the pleasure of the flesh.”
— Saint Thomas Aquinas

‬”In temptations against chastity, the spiritual masters advise us, not so much to contend with the bad thought, as to turn the mind to some spiritual, or, at least, indifferent object. It is useful to combat other bad thoughts face to face, but not thoughts of impurity.”
— Saint Alphonsus Liguori

“Lust indulged became habit, and habit unresisted became necessity.”
— Saint Augustine

“Either we must speak as we dress, or dress as we speak. Why do we profess one thing and display another? The tongue talks of chastity, but the whole body reveals impurity.”
— Saint Jerome

“I am less alarmed for one who is tempted and who resists by avoiding the occasions, than for one who is not tempted and is not careful to avoid occasions. When a person puts himself in an occasion, saying, I shall not fall, it is an almost infallible sign that he will fall, and with great injury to his soul.”
— Saint Philip Neri

“The state of grace is nothing other than purity, and it gives heaven to those who clothe themselves in it. Holiness, therefore, is simply the state of grace purified, illuminated, beautified by the most perfect purity, exempt not only from mortal sin but also from the smallest faults; purity will make saints of you! Everything lies in this!”
— Saint Peter Julian Eymard

“There is no remedy so powerful against the heat of concupiscence as the remembrance of our Savior’s Passion. In all my difficulties I never found anything so efficacious as the wounds of Christ: In them I sleep secure; from them I derive new life.”
— Saint Augustine

“You carry your snare everywhere and spread your nets in all places. You allege that you never invited others to sin. You did not indeed, by your words, but you have done so by your dress and your deportment.”
— Saint John Chrysostom

“Let your modesty be a sufficient incitement, yea, an exhortation to everyone to be at peace on their merely looking at you.”
— Saint Ignatius of Loyola

What about the‭ ‬approved Marian apparitions such as Fatima that deplored the fashions and sin of impurity‭? Was it no longer applicable all of a sudden? If so, why? Why, when all the world is at its worst, impurity is no longer considered such an important issue (or serious sin) as, lets say “IMMIGRATION” is ?

All explanations,‭ ‬justifications,‭ ‬and excuses that were given‭ ‬never answered the actual questions‭; ‬they were just based more on emotion,‭ ‬feelings,‭ ‬and ideas,‭ ‬while bashing the‭ “‬facts‭” ‬given.‭ ‬It was always a race to prove why NOT‭ ‬wear such and such‭; ‬why take things so literally‭?‬ But then there are letters from poor Catholic men (and women!) who deplored the immodesty fashions and spoke about how it is such a great challenge to them; spiritually! (see letter from 19 year old guy here) Instead of charity and openness to discuss the issue,‭ ‬it was always a‭ ‬defense‭ ‬of what they wore,‭ ‬and‭ ‬why it was OK. On top of everything, the vicious attitude of women against other women who wanted to dress more modestly was astounding.

It just didn’t add up.‭ ‬It just didn’t‭ ‬make sense.

I could not‭ “‬find my way‭”‬ because I wanted to make sure that what I was doing was‭ ‬with the Catholic Church,‭ ‬and not some‭ ‬scrupulous people who thought that elbows and collar-bones were from the devil‭!‬ I wanted proof,‭ ‬logic,‭ ‬and‭ ‬clear answers. I wanted a middle ground.

‭ ‬It wasn’t until I found Rita Davidson’s book that I finally felt‭ ‬encouraged.‭ ‬Not only because she spoke the same language as I,‭ ‬but because‭ ‬she had facts that made sense.‭ ‬She answered all my questions‭; ‬and‭ ‬reaffirmed what I had earlier thought and researched.

‭“‬Immodesty,‭ ‬Satan’s Virtue‭”‬ takes every question,‭ ‬scruple,‭ ‬and‭ excuse‬,‭ ‬and answers them clearly and logically,‭ ‬with Biblical,‭ ‬Pope-quoted,‭ ‬common-sense.‭

The critically acclaimed speaker,‭ ‬theologian,‭ ‬professor Emerita at Hunter College of Cuny,‭ ‬Alice von Hildebrand‭ ‬wrote the beautiful forward to the book,‭ ‬calling Rita,‭

“ expert in this field,‭ ‬she is eloquent about informing us of the traps that immodest women’s clothing are clearly set to degrade society‭…”

‭ Unlike every Catholic website, blog, book, article and speaker so far, the author of “immodesty…..” answers every question, and does not leave room for speculation. She leaves the reader with information on how to contact her with any questions !

Why is “Immodesty, Satan’s Virtue” a book that is worthy of reading?

‭1. It is not put forth as her argument, but, rather, as a compilation of facts, and information regarding the importance of modesty and the message of Our Lady of Fatima.

‭2. It had the “blessing” of Alice von Hildebrand, whom I greatly admire as a true feminine woman of God.

‭3. In the beginning of the book, the author states her recognition and acceptance of the final authority of the Holy See of Rome, and submits her judgment “should it be found in error one day.”

‭4. She has over 18 years of research, prayer, submission to God’s will, and knowledge on the subject, which she displays in a charitable and informative way.

‭5. The statement, “practice what you preach” is very important here ; for one example: even when the author was made homeless for 6 months because of a terrible fire that consumed the home of her family, (AND their car, AND their personal information), she continued to “preach, rarely with words – St. Francis Xavier”, and kept true to her modest attire, Christian attitude, and submission to the will of God.

‭6. The fact that the only copy of her book, and research was SAVED from the vicious fire;.

‭7. The information that is uncovered is magnificent! From Fashion History, to in depth-quotes from the Bible, Saints and Popes, to what Padre Pio REALLY said about skirt 8“ below the knee! And even Frances heroic Saint Joan of Arc wearing pants!

‭Give “Immodesty, Satan’s Virtue” a chance, even if Modesty is something you are not really interested in, or if you are firmly planted in a specific stance on the issue.

We are called to “‬prove all things; hold fast that which is good‭” ( 1 Thess 5:21 ), we are called to be “‬..perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect‭.” (Matthew 5:48)

Can we truly say we are trying our best if we are not TRYING?

‭Perhaps there is something in this book that is meant for you to know? There is only one way to find out.

Until next time; God bless!
