Nothing Funny About “Catholic Memes”

” Let no Christian therefore, whether philosopher or theologian, embrace eagerly and lightly whatever novelty happens to be thought up from day to day, but rather let him weigh it with painstaking care and a balanced judgment, lest he lose or corrupt the truth he already has, with grave danger and damage to his faith.”
Pope Pius XII

The well-known “Official” “Catholic Memes” database isn’t funny. Sure, maybe a few are, but not many. They have over 300,000 “likes” on their Facebook page; bragging over 2 millions views per week, and 5,279 followers in Twitter.

Why do I have beef with CM? I’ll tell you why.

Their Bad Taste – period.

(why does this always happen with “popular” Catholics nowadays?)

But how can you know anything of the impression made on others? Who can assure you that others do not draw therefrom incentives to evil? You do not know the depths of human frailty. . .
Pope Pius XII

This one was what got me started – I added the BLOCK, you’re welcome.

Notice Catholic Meme’s reply; “The art in the Vatican has more wa*** than a Chinese phone booth. Lighten up.”

Further he mocks the few who hinted at the bad taste of the “joke”,

Or I could just ban you for insulting me and presuming to know my Catholicity…”

Hmmm makes me think (aside from other comments that wouldn’t be Christian to repeat) of Matthew 5:11 –  Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake. Which actually leads to my next example;

Am I going to have to explain this? — ugh, I guess so.

One of the favorite pastimes of Modern Catholics is to poke fun at the Trads. Nothing new there.

But honestly? This is pathetic. Whether you support Church or not; the fact of the matter is – They are calling out the disgusting (insert swear word here), that is going on in the Church in the US ; while the USCCB knows of it and does nothing. Like Gay masses, pedophile priests who are just moved from Church to Church, Active gay priests, seminaries promoting Gay crap, CLERGY promoting Gay Crap, it goes on and on.

To make a joke out of a ministry that is working to RE-evangelize terribly catechized Catholics, raise “awareness” of what is going on – to change it and pray for the crisis, … is .. wait.. let me get my thesaurus..

Pitiable. Ridiculous. Absurd. Useless. Immature. Unreasonable. Dumb. Inane. Meaningless. Naive. Senseless.Imprudent. Thoughtless.

To laugh at a Catholic that is actually working for the Salvation of souls while you sit there and do nothing but try to follow the world as closely as possible is pathetic. Of course it’s not what I say that matters, but the truth that matters. So when you die , tell me how it went.

But, as mentioned before… to write about Pathetic Catholics poking fun at Faithful Catholics who actually care more about the Soul than the latest Pokemon or Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor , would take a book. Probably a series.

It is a serious problem in the Catholic Church today, and it must be addressed.

And for the whole “more Catholic than the Pope” line? Puh-leeze.

(They wrote, “Please note the Monstrance is empty before commenting“… however this does not change the problem of the immodesty, or the bad taste overall. NOTE: I covered Beyoncé up – the original picture didn’t.)

On top of everything those few who actually commented on it, calling it out were made fun of. Which is the typical response that “Mod” Catholics like to use when told they are doing something that may be sinful. But that’s a whole book in itself.

Of course, there’s always the comments on how scrupulous people are now about the body… to answer “Jennifer Christian” – Nope, artistic nudes are not pornography. They are “just” nudity – But the fact that there are people who battle heavily with temptations of the flesh, and the fact that looking upon a woman with lust is enough to damn someone to hell? Well? That’s enough reason to care a bit when nudity is thrown around without a second thought. (Good grief. Sometimes you feel like you are talking down to Kindergartener’s these days when it comes to common sense Catholicism…)

Harmless. Yep. Except for the fact that it promotes the dumb song, “Sexy & I Know It“. (Face-palm)

Enough with trying to blend the world & the Church – it ain’t gonna happen.

Oookay? Funny.. but not that funny.

Modern Day” Catholicism tries to incorporate worldly happenings & favorites into their articles, memes, whatever; because they figure it’s how to attract people, and HECK! It’s what’s happening “get with the times!“. Or maybe, they are just too chicken to commit to a lifetime of suffering, working to overcome sin & temptation, the betterment of ourselves, the standing up and being different from everyone even to the point of ridicule… because honey, that’s what Catholicism is.

Instead of promoting something that we can REACH for – in the bettering of ourselves, or moral virtue & character, our Catholic way of life, the same ole’ World Stuff is promoted – mixed somewhat with a taste of Catholicism. Instead of being called to better ourselves in,

  • Our thoughts – holy books, Saints lives, All Catholic Teaching (including PRE & Post Vatican II books, etc), surrounding ourselves with good companions, staying away from bad movies/tv shows/music/etc,
  • Our words – learning to talk with sincerity, with a pure heart & tongue, with no gossiping or detraction (Hey! Anyone want to bring up Michael Voris’ past sins to laugh at and judge him with?),
  • Our actions – dressing modestly, staying away from impure dancing…

… we are held to a stop. Feeding ourselves with both lower and equal value information / jokes / ideas / morals / whatever, instead of reaching for the higher/more worthy/humble/pure! Is this what we are called to do??

Being able to take the good/sinless parts of the modern world (infinity scarves fashion, clean movies…) and use it in your life as your progress to hopefully sainthood and betterment is fine! In fact, we are called to do this!

But taking EVERYTHING in the world, even things that are “iffy” and lead to sin, is a bad example, and can lead to further temptation sin and loss of souls.

An excellent quote concerning this;  There are no pacifists in the Body of Christ, for we are called to battle Satan, this fallen world and our own flesh now prone to deceive us, as Christ reminds us in Mathew 26:41, ‘Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ It is our conduct and bearing in this combat that determine the eternal disposition of our immortal souls in Heaven or Hell.”

Reading any Saint’s book affirms this. Aside from the Bible, Church Teaching & Pope-Quotes.

The modern world, a world which has experienced marvelous achievements but which seems to have lost its sense of ultimate realities and of existence itself.

Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel. It is the time to preach it from the rooftops. Do not be afraid to break out of comfortable and routine modes of living in order to take up the challenge of making Christ known in the modern metropolis.

Pope John Paul II
“The trend of fashions is not in itself evil. It flows spontaneously from the social nature of man, in accordance with an impulse which inclines him to keep in harmony with his fellow men, and with the way of acting of those amongst whom he lives. God does not ask you to live outside your times, so careless of the exigencies of fashion as to render yourselves ridiculous, by dressing in a way opposed to the common tastes and practices of your contemporaries. In following fashion, virtue lies in the middle course. What God asks of you is to remember always that fashion is not, and cannot be, the ultimate rule of conduct for you, that beyond fashion and its demands, there are higher and more pressing laws, principles superior to fashion, and unchangeable, which under no circumstances can be sacrificed to the whim of pleasure or fancy, and before which must bow the fleeting omnipotence of the idol of fashion.”

“That which does not correspond to the truth or to the moral norm possesses, objectively, no right either to existence or to propagation or to action.”

The preaching of the faith has lost nothing of its relevance in our times. The Church has a sacred duty to proclaim it without any whittling-down, just as Christ revealed it, and no consideration of time or circumstance can lessen the strictness of this obligation.”
“The good of our soul is more important than that of our body; and we have to prefer the spiritual welfare of our neighbor to our bodily comforts. . . If a certain kind of dress constitutes a grave and proximate occasion of sin, and endangers the salvation of your soul and others, it is your duty to give it up.”

“What sins are committed or provoked by conversations which are too free, by immodest shows, by dangerous reading. How lax have consciences become, how pagan morals!

Pope Pius XII
